Review & Give-Away: Thirsties

September 8, 2009

Thirsties is a small (but growing!) cloth diaper company committed to greener parenting and eco-friendly solutions, not to mention 100% USA made quality! Our diapers are made by work at home mothers, and very close to our Canon City warehouse, reducing our carbon output. We donate to Miracle Diapers, a company in which one can apply for free or low cost diapers to those with financial need. We also have donated to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital – Epidermolysis Bullosa Center. Our diapers are made of a Micro Terry that is very soft to the touch. This fabric helps these babies with this skin disorder to be more comfortable, reduce sores, and even to live a longer life! We have a commitment to our planet, and also to provide a lower cost option to those interested in cloth diapering.

Thirsties Customer Service

I’d like to begin by saying thank you to the folks at Thirsties, some of the nicest people you’ll ever “meet”!  They have been very helpful and more than accommodating through our review process!  If I could literally make this review glow for you through your internet browser, I would.  We are that pleased, not just because they are nice people, but because the product is that fabulous!

Baby O and I received a Thirsties Fab Fitted along with both their new Duo Wrap and Diaper Cover to review.  I’ve mentioned before that I used to be one of those people that didn’t see the point in purchasing a fitted diaper when I could just use a prefold for much less.  Now I get it.  I mean, I really get it!  Fitted diapers are worth a little extra cash because, well, they fit.  I imagine a snug fit becomes even more important as baby becomes more mobile, no?

While I don’t want to knock the prefold, I must rave about the fitted!  The first time I put the Fab Fitted on Baby O, it was like a light bulb went off.  Ohhh, I see! The fitted is incredibly soft, squishy, and luxurious, yet trim.  Baby O is on the smaller end of the weight recommendation for the size small fitted, and it still fits great.  I was concerned that a fitted diaper would not absorb or wick moisture as well as a pocket diaper.  The Fab Fitted does both of these things just fine.  We’ve actually found after extended wear, such as overnight or for a nap, the outer layer of the fitted is more wet than the part touching Baby O’s skin, but it never wicks so much that it leaks either.  The velcro closure allows us to get a perfect fit without gaps at his legs or around his waist.  We have had zero leaks using the Thirsties diapering system!  My husband likes the Fab Fitted so much he’s nearly sworn off prefolds entirely!

Using a fitted diaper along with a wrap or cover makes me feel like I’m getting double the leak protection.  First the fitted goes on snuggly and absorbantly, and then the snug waterproof cover goes on over that.

We tried both the classic Thirsties Diaper Cover and their new Duo Wrap for this review.  The classic Diaper Cover is free of PVC, phthalates, lead, and latex.  It comes in 13 different colors, ours is Periwinkle.  We tried the cover with both the Fab Fitted and a prefold.  It performed equally well with both, but the Fab Fitted was a bit more trim.  The velcro closure offers adjustability and the leg gussets in Thirsties covers perform particularly well, keeping everything neatly tucked in.

The Duo Wrap is the latest cover offered by Thirsties.  The Duo Wrap is also a waterproof PUL, free of PVC, phthalates, lead, and latex.  This wrap is an adjustable cover featuring three rows of snaps on the front for maximum shape and size versatility.  The Duo comes in two sizes.  The smaller size one fits most babies from 6-18 lbs (Baby O wears this size at 13 lbs and 25″.), and the larger size two wrap fits most babies from 18-40 lbs.  Notice this two size system offers a wider range than most one size diapers (10-32 lbs, according to findings at Thirsties).   This is probably a bit more realistic about what many babies will actually need.  The folks at Thirsties have found that most One-Size diaper users usually end up purchasing three sizes rather than one:  newborn, one-size, and toddler.  We haven’t had to do this as Baby O was a bit bigger than the average newborn, but I can see how a duo wrap would certainly cut down on the bulk of trying to put a one-size diaper on a 6 lb infant!  Economically speaking, this diapering system could save you tons of money!

We tried the Duo Wrap in Meadow (pictured above), and it performed perfectly.  Baby O wears his on the largest setting.  We tried it over both a prefold and the Fab Fitted.  Like the classic Thirsties Diaper Cover, it performed equally well over both, but the fitted offered a more trim fit than the prefold.

In comparing the classic Diaper Cover to the Duo Wrap, it’s difficult to pick a favorite.  They fit almost the same, but I’d say the classic Thirsties Diaper Cover fits a little better.  On the other hand, the Duo Wrap is a little more wallet friendly while still offering a great fit!

With Thirsties you can feel confident in your purchase.  They offer an amazing 90 day Replacement Warranty for defects and a Lifetime Repair Warranty for stitching and velcro tabs.

Hi, I am loving using Thirsties…I used them when my then 9 week old son had a horrendous diaper rash from every disposable I tried. He is, thankfully, now 13 weeks and has a happy tushy. We love the fab fitted diapers with the original thiristies wrap. Today, I was running errands and had to leave him in his diaper for nearly 4 hours, bad Mommy, and guess what, no leaks! I learned today from their website, that they employ women in their hometown to sew there diapers, to provide employment to their community. What a great thing. I would like to know any suggestions for getting poopy stains out or not to be there in the first place. I live in Ohio, where the sun doesn’t shine to much, so suggestions would be wonderful! Thanks!

    • September 11, 2009 1:05 pm

      Shoshie~
The only real (and CD friendly) suggestion I have for stains is hanging your cloth on the line for the sun to get at them. Even in an area lacking sun (trust me, I know all about this!), eventually it will work. It might take a little longer, but maybe it’s worth the wait?
Also, I think the longer a soiled diaper sits before it is washed, the more set-in stains become. We wash our cloth every other day and still have a few stains. I just accept them. ;) Perhaps a diaper sprayer would be helpful for a quick rinse before throwing the diaper in your wet bag? Or maybe just an extra rinse in the wash would help?
I guess I had a few more suggestions than I thought!
      Anyway, hope it helps!

I learned that in lieu of vinegar in the final rinse, they prefer plain lime juice. 1 Tsp lime juice will aid in naturally disinfecting and neutralizing, and is safe for all types of cloth diapers.

the covers are made from a single layer of waterproof laminated fabric, these covers are soft and pliable and can be wiped clean between uses which allows for fewer covers in rotation.
